Papaver Somniferum And Growing

This is a relatively easy to grow flower, of course some varieties of it are easier to grow as well as germinating times are sometimes slightly different, for example the White Persian variety, blossoms about two months before, than most; but some Turkish varieties, have a higher planted-blossomed rate.

In general, a well moist soil is perfect, as in England, were the plants are even usually self-soiled. A cool weather place is appropriate for Papaver Somniferum planting. And growing it is perfectly legal, as its alkaloids are not produced in enough quantities to make it dangerous. A completely different story happens in warm and tropical places, where these addictive substances are produced in larger quantities, and therefore, they are often grown illegally. When legal, it’s mostly for medicine making; it’s not so common for ornamental purposes in such latitudes. A sunny location is also necessary.

The best germinating temperature is at about 15 degrees C. The plant flowers in April and May and the capsules are ripe between June and July.

For proper and successful soiling Papaver Somniferum and growing, it is important to know the pests and parasites that can attack the plant, so an effective prevention can be made to ensure a good growing.

There is a significative number of fungi attacking the plant, like: Mucor mucedo, Macrosporium papaveris, Erysiphe polygoni, Heterosporium echinulatum, Alternaria brassicae var. somniferi, Fusarium scirpi var. caudatum, Cladosporium herbarum, M. bresdolae, Rhizoctonia solari, Peronospora arborescens, Trichothecium roseum, P. papaveracea, Oidium erysiphoides, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Ophiobolus sativus.

The bacteria Bacillus (Erwinia) papavery causes bacterial blight.

Plants are also attacked by the following nematodes: Ditylenchus dipsaci, Pratylenchus crenatus, P. pratensis, P. penetrans, Longidorus maximus, and Meloidogyne sp.

A certain beetle lives in the cup-shaped flowers seeking protection and possibly for food, and while moving inside the ovary, destroys the stamen around the ovary, then hindering the pollination process.

The plant grows to about one meter high, its life is annual, and most of its varieties go from deep purple with red to pink shades in between, only very few like the White Persian mentioned before and the China White, have as their name indicate, a unusual white color.

Until germination occurs, constant and well watering is very necessary, this normally takes about a week, and then watering should be done more sparingly, so the plant doesn’t get rot. After the first leaves appear, watering can repeat again, and it is also a good time for applying some fertilizer once in a while. Sometimes the plant falls over, but this is actually normal.

Shortly after the flower bud appears, the tip of the stalk bents over with the weight of the bud. Then flowering starts, and that is time to stop watering, unless the plant is wilting. Then it will gradually get dry and drop its seeds.
