Papaver Somniferum flower seedGetting the right seed, may be a whole odyssey, since there is quite a number of varieties of them, most of which if not all, we will be able to go over here.A very interesting one because of the beauty of the flower it gives, it’s the Indian black seed that of course as its name announces, give us a pretty flower with very dark purple petals that seem to be actually black. Perhaps this “elegant” appearance is the reason this flower is commonly used for ornamental purposes, after it is dried up of course. They grow to an average size. Then, there is the Persian White Seed, this one if you want to get this variety in its most authentic form; a place to find it is in Iran. Its flowers appear about two months before other varieties, which always may be nice and even useful for some. A very similar to the Persian White, but not that close in beauty, is the China White Seed. This one is a more normal looking flower, of course for that reason is a lot easier to find, caused for a lower demand. Growing this plant is quite an easy task as well. Another one even rarer than the Persian White, it is the Tasmania Seed, pretty much it can only be found there, as growers seem to be a little jealous with their flower, so it is difficult to get it out of there. Now if you can, this one is interesting for its color that goes from a very light pink to almost white. The good thing is that the pods have abundant seeds. Papaver somniferum seeds, of course are not used for flower growing purposes only, as they have a long list of very useful chemical substances in them, but they don’t contain the dangerous and even addictive alkaloids found in the green seed vessels, such as morphine and opium. So they are safe and very recommendable for cooking purposes, as –among others- they contain: Protein, hydrogen, calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, crude fiber, and some enzymes and minerals. Their use in cooking is mostly as a flavoring in bread, cakes, and fruit salads. An oil with a peculiar almond type flavor can be also obtained from this seeds, and it is good to be used instead of olive oil. This oil is also used for lighting, as it burns for a longer time than other oils, as well as a soap-making agent and in paints. So as seen here, the seeds themselves have a broad variety of uses. Now, it can be a bad idea to eat them before a urinalysis, for even though as mentioned before, they contain not alkaloids, in a urinalysis some traces of them, may appear, suggesting a morphine addiction. So you get consequences without really getting any fun, only good taste in food for it. |
