Papaver Somniferum Gigantheum

Papaver somniferum seeds are not used for flower growing purposes only, as they have a long list of very useful chemical substances in them, but they do not contain the dangerous and even addictive alkaloids found in the green seed vessels, such as morphine and opium. Therefore, they are safe and recommendable for cooking purposes, as –among others- they contain Protein, hydrogen, calcium, phosphorus, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, crude fiber, and some enzymes and minerals.

So as seen here, the seeds themselves have a broad variety of uses. Now, it can be a bad idea to eat them before a urinalysis, for even though as mentioned before, they contain not alkaloids, in a urinalysis, they may suggest a morphine or heroin consume.

Papaver somniferum gigantheum grows from a lettuce-type base with a single stalk, usually reaching 4 feet or more. Flower colors vary from pure white, shading to light pink in some varieties; and the most common ones are various types of red, until very strong purples that in the Indian Black poppy, which as it’s name suggests is almost black.

This variety of opium poppy is relatively easy to find on the market, and easier to find on the Internet, price tends to be a little higher as well, mostly associated to the bigger size and the time of year. Think that being a one-season flower, it is less available before the flowering, which approximately occurs before June or July (flowering has timing differences in between poppy varieties).

Revising local laws may be very helpful if instead of making or having dried flower arrangements, you actually want to plant them. When buying dried pods, they normally come with the seeds, unless they are a very exclusive variety. Especially on the Gigantheum variety, as it has a bigger size, opium and the other alkaloids are contained in greater amounts. Growing opium poppies is often illegal, especially in the U.S and South America. It is important to mention that even though growing may be prohibited in South American countries, law-application in such cases is not always strong enough. Opium poppy is often grown illegally there.
