Papaver Somniferum Grow Sow

Papaver somniferum grow sow and harvest is an annual cycle, with not many difficulties as these are quite resistant plants. At cool weathers they even grow as wild flowers, something surprising considering that for centuries, humans have been taking care of its planting.

As mentioned before, the flower grows better in cool weathers, but it is possible to do grow and sow at warm lands, as long as moisture is enough.

The seeds need to be barely covered, and a little scattered, for a proper growing. They take about ten to twenty days to germinate when the weather is cool enough; if it is not, it will just take a little longer. To shorten times when sowing in such weathers, you may want to do the following trick. Plant them in peat pellets as normal, and then put them in the refrigerator for about a week. They will not germinate in there, but will shortly after you get them out.

As the stems, start coming out, it is important to take care of them against pests. Fungus is the most recurrent pest, but good ventilation is enough to prevent them. Also, take care of insects, especially from beetles. To give those stems some extra strength, preparing some chamomile tea (one tea bag per quart of water) to water the seedlings a soon as they come out; or using one part of hydrogen peroxide to eight parts of water to drench the soil.

Not to heavy soil is better, combined with vermiculite and sand. And it will be near to perfect if some black cow composted manure is added to the equation, fortunately, it does not smell.

There is not a big problem to do papaver somniferum grow sow indoors, because using lights help and keeps a cool environment. Take it off daily to fertilize the flower by brushing the pollen from the stamens (wiry things) to the ovary (in the center) lightly. When the petals finally fall, take the sack off, and the seeds produced in the pod should be the pure strain.
