POPPIES
(Author: Attilio Bertolucci)

This is a year of poppies: our land
was overflowing with them when I returned
between May and June, and got drunk
on a wine so sweet, so dark.
From cloudy mulberry to grain to meadow,
ripeness was all, in a gentle
heat, a slow drowsiness
spread throughout the green universe.
Now at life's midpoint, I've seen
grown-up sons go off alone
and disappear beyond the net of flights
the swallow keeps to in the spent glow
Of stormy evening,
and the pain gave way
naturally to the lights of home,
of another dinner in air refreshed,
by hail unleashed in the distance.

Some professional authors write seriously poems about poppies, other, keen writers make poems about poppies just for fun. The case is that writing poems about poppies is a topic that gives great cloth where from cutting. Without mentioning that poppy plants have great medicinal value: hypnotic, pain relieving and narcotic, and that its juice mixed with hemlock induced a speedy and painless death.
Here we have another poem that exemplifies some writer’s love for poppies:

THE POPPY SEED LADY
(Author: Unknown)

A time of magicians and spells
A beautiful maiden was created
Her name Postomani, Poppy Seed Lady
Born of a mouse with the power of speech,
And then transformed it into a cat, a dog, an ape, a boar
Before her final transformation

A royal tale was then spun of deceit, love and death

The Poppy Seed Lady's flesh and bone of her untimely death
Grew a plant called Posto - The Poppy Tree
From this plant will be obtained a drug called opium,
Either smoked or swallowed a wondrous feeling was created
If abused, it will generate the consumer one quality of each of the animals
To which Postomani has been transformed
He will be mischievous like a mouse,
Fond of milk like a cat,
Quarrelsome like a dog,
Filthy like an ape,
Savage like a boar,
High tempered like a queen.

A lot of the most worldwide recognized authors have experimented the poppy effects by themselves to increase their creativity; creativity that has remained captured in their masterpieces.

It is interesting to note that the first written record of the poppy is found in Hesiod (eighth century B.C.), who states that in the vicinity of Corinth there was a city named Mekonę, this means “Poppy town.”
