Poppy Plant Seeds

TAKE A LOOK AND ENJOY THEM!
As a newcomer I enrolled in a cookery class to impress my husband; a naturalistic association in Irving, Texas, promoted the advertising. They promoted healthy and easy-to-do recipes. The very first class I was going to be the first to abandon the course; I got scared when I heard that we would be using poppies seeds! My first thought was: “What kind of food are we going to make with drugs? After a long explanation from the instructor I felt relieved. In fact, I was anxious to experiment with those poppies plant seeds!

I really learned something when the instructor explained us that poppy seeds do not contain any kind of opium substance, not above the healthy one hundred percent permitted by the United States Food and Service Administration. I had to learn more about this topic; I promise to myself!

The instructor gave us in just two classes enough light: “Poppy seed has been cultivated for over 3,000 years so this seed has been used as a condiment as early as the first century A.D. Poppy Seeds are used to add nutty flavor and texture to breads, cakes, buttered egg noodles, rolls, vegetables and fruit salad dressings, strudels, pastry crusts, pancake waffle batters, and cookies in European and Middle Eastern cooking. Turkish cuisine uses toasted poppy seeds; they are often ground and used in desserts. In India, the seeds are ground and used to thicken sauces. The seeds are also used in noodle, fish, and vegetable dishes in Jewish, German, and Slavic cooking.” She said. Later I said to my husband: “Besides the cooking usage of poppies plant seeds she gave us a kind of cultural class, that is great!”

The first weekend, as I promise to myself I went to the library to learn more about these seeds, I took a book and started reading that the botanical name for the poppy flower means, "sleep bearing”; the alkaloid content of poppy plant seeds is low (50 ppm) and cannot have any pharmaceutical effect. It is, however, high enough that morphine can be detected in the urine after heavy poppy seed consumption. Highly nutritious, the seed contains about 22.7% protein, 48% fat, 9.8% carbohydrate, and 7.1% ash. Poppy seeds are used in the food industry, pharmaceutics and as a feedstuff, but their most important use is as an oil-bearing fruit: when cold-pressed, poppy seed produces good edible oil. The poppy seed yields 44 - 50% of an edible drying oil, it is very good for lighting, poppy burns for longer than most oils. More information: Poppy oil, derived from the seeds, is employed in cooking and illumination and in paints, varnishes, and soaps. Are not poppy plant seeds wonderful!
